Join us Thursday, May 14th from 9:00-10:00am for our weekly covid response call.

Speaker: Matthew Bossler

Colorado's restaurants, retailers, and service providers face an uncertain commercial environment for the foreseeable future, as social-distancing regulations limit the level of commercial transactions that can (or should) occur indoors, and many patrons avoid in-person contact entirely. Chief among those impacted are downtown businesses with little room to expand outdoors on their own lot.  Leniency and technical assistance by local and state government can help brick and mortar businesses utilize the adjacent public realm (and private parking lots) as relief valves to sustain revenues through a time of crisis. Matthew Bossler, PLA | MUD (SHIFT Planning and Design, LLC) will review key considerations for rapidly repurposing public space as a COVID response, including:

  • urban design and transportation management,
  • event production logistics,
  • liability considerations, and
  • expedited licensing and permitting.
To conclude, Matthew will briefly describe efforts underway in Denver to open streets to commercial use by community-serving businesses, and how these can quickly expand to include other Colorado communities.
